The person who was playing Ciel was OOC, but I didn't want to say it until you had watched the anime and drawn your own conclusions. Even in the manga Ciel is about the same as he is in the anime.
If your heart has broken for him, just WAIT until Season 2. (But you'll feel bad for Sebastian too. XD) Season 2 is also much less monster-of-the-week.
