NaBloPoMo Day One
November 1st, 2010 02:16 amI should really do an update-y post, and I will do that at some point, but first things first- I've decided I'm attempting National Blog Posting Month this year. To help with this, I'm snitching that writing meme that
februaryfour has been doing- this will give me something to post every day, so I won't have to be scrambling trying to think of something to write about before midnight. That being said, this meme seems to be focused on original writing, so that's what I'm going to talk about. If you don't care, well... skip these, yeah?
Day 1: Tell us about your favourite writing project/universe that you’ve worked with and why.
Hmm. I'm not big on creating new universes- as much as I love to read fantasy, I feel like I'm not equipped to write it. Fantasy requires a lot of epic, detailed description because it's a foreign world and your words are acting as the reader's eyes, and description has ALWAYS been a weak point for me in original fiction. I always feel like I'm overdoing it, I guess, and it gets awkward. No one wants that.
That being said, I've tried on a couple of occasions to make something work. One is so undeveloped it never even got a name, but the other was Nihdon (don't ask where the name came from, I have no idea, this was back in middle school. On a side note, Google informs me that "Nihon" means "the sun's origin" in Japanese. Interesting!). As with most fantasy novels, it was a world with magic and I grew rather fond of it. If only the plot wasn't so... predictable. XD
As far as projects go, there will always be a special place in my heart for the first story I ever finished- actually, the only story I've ever finished- which I don't remember the name of and the notebook sadly got lost somewhere along the line. It was probably horrible and horrifically inaccurate. It was a Civil War thing, based on this teenage girl that had fallen in love with one of the slaves her father owned. I don't remember the girl's name, but the boy's name was James. Which should probably tell you exactly how much I cared about Whatshername. Anyway, her father went off to fight in the war, when it was starting to look bad for the South, and James ran away shortly thereafter. Whatshername eventually found a new boy, Alex, which her twin Tom wasn't too happy with. He was kind of overprotective, and kind of an ass, and pretty violent sometimes. In other words, he was fun to write. I won't bore you with any more details, especially since I don't remember a whole lot more of it, but yeah. I was 12 at the time and I'm fully aware of how soap opera like my stories got at that age. I'm never going to try re-writing it, but it'll always be special to me.
