30 Days Meme Day 4
September 4th, 2011 02:15 pmDay 04 - Your views on religion.
As far as religion itself: I think at the core, it's innocent enough- it's just people wanting to believe that there's something greater than themselves, trying to explain what's out there. I don't think that's a bad thing. The problem is that religion, particularly Christianity, has become so corrupt over the centuries. Religion isn't about spirituality, it's about money and power. I'm reminded of a Ghandi quote here that goes, "I like your Christ. I do not like your Christians. They are so unlike your Christ." I have to say that individually, it's a case- by- case thing, but overall as a group I agree wholeheartedly.
My beliefs: Well, we've gone through this recently, haven't we? I'm an Atheist and have been since I was 11. I don't believe in any sort of god or higher being, though I'm not claiming that I know everything or anything ridiculous like that. I honestly don't think there's any way for us to know for sure. (On a side note, if there IS a "higher power", it's probably aliens and we probably exist as an amusing toy.) I don't have any problems with other religions as long as it's not being shoved on me. Religion fascinates me, honestly. I've had open and intelligent conversations with people about religion (though if I'm completely honest, all of those were either with other Atheists, Agnostics, or Pagans. XD)- I'm not closed to the topic at all.
I do, however, get angry quickly when someone starts preaching to me or tries to convert me. When I went to Pride this summer, there was a group of bible thumpers on the corner protesting. I'm sure I don't need to tell you the kinds of signs they had- I couldn't tell you what they were saying, because I went out of my way to not go near them. Mary and I spent a good long time ranting about it between the two of us afterward. It all comes back to what I said about the drugs and alcohol: do whatever you want, but be safe and don't hurt anybody else. It's the last part of that which applies here. DON'T BE AN ASSHOLE. Just because you can try to shove your beliefs down our throats, that doesn't mean it's the right thing to do.
And again I've gone off on a rant. ^_^;;;
